HAMBURG: The EU Commission wants all products to carry sustainability information in the future.
This will cover energy consumption as well as the use or pollution of natural resources such as water, air and land in the manufacturing process.
The aim is to position European products as the most environmentally friendly in the world.
So far, any sustainability measures taken by industry are voluntary, but the EU Commission plans to write clear regulations forcing companies to comply in the future.
Meanwhile, in Switzerland, two retailers have help to launch website designed to monitor carbon footprints.
Together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Swisscom, retailers Migros and Coop have created CO2 Monitor.
It helps people to monitor their personal carbon footprint and to exchange ideas in a like-minded community.
The website also offers specific advice on carbon friendly products and services as well as special discounts for energy saving products.
The website is also supported by the Swiss Ministry for the Environment.
