KUALA LUMPUR: There is no indication when a ban on Malaysian alcohol imports will be lifted.
Malaysia imposed a ban on new alcoholic beverage imports last October. No new licenses will be issued to importers who wish to bring in new wine labels and varieties as well as other hard liquors.
However, importers, distributors and even foreign embassies were not formally notified of the ban.
The new regulation discovered was when shipments were held up at the port.
Malaysia Customs explained the ruling was implemented to control smuggling activities. In addition, customs cited sufficient supplies of wine, beer and spirits are in market at present.
NZTE has spoken to Malaysia Customs to confirm the ruling but no further notice has been given as to when the ban will be lifted.
